Michelle Boyd was born in Columbia, SC where she attended the University of South Carolina and obtained her bachelor degree in business. She later moved to Charlotte, NC where she met and married her husband of 12 years. During that time, she fell in love with community workforce development initiatives. An educator at heart, Michelle agrees with Paulo Freire, world-renowned Brazilian educator, who believes that adults can change their lives through the power of education. With that in mind, she obtained a Masters in Adult Education from NC A&T State University in 2008.
Currently, Michelle Boyd serves as AHEC Assistant Director for Health Careers & Diversity Education at the Charlotte Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a division of Carolinas HealthCare System. In this role, she leads a team to successfully plan, evaluate and develop workforce development initiatives and programming. Initiatives include: health careers programming for grades K-12, Spanish and cultural competency classes for healthcare professionals and professional development for interpreters in the healthcare setting. She has been with Carolinas HealthCare System since 2001.
Michelle is an active member of the community. She serves as:
• Board member of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Schools’ Academic Internship Program
• Advisory board member for Carolinas College of Health Sciences which was rated #1 best in the nation for two year schools
• Past National Scholarship Chair for the National Association of Medical Minority Educators, Inc. (NAMME) where she has led a team to award thousands of dollars to deserving minority health science students across the country.
• Past chair for the NC AHEC Health Careers and Workforce Diversity Council
• Volunteer Facilitator for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont.
• She was also a recipient of the Southern Region National Association of Medical Minority Educators, Inc. (NAMME) Emerging Leader Award in 2009.
In her spare time, she can be found attending Charlotte Lady Warrior AAU basketball games or attending BB Dance Studios dance competitions. Her 14 year old daughter is a nationally ranked basketball player. Her husband is a coach and the team ranked 1st in North Carolina. Her 10 year old daughter is a competitive dancer and her team has placed in every competition they have entered. Michelle travels at length on weekends to support both daughters’ extra-curricular activities. She is a proud mom and wife.
